One of the most popular waterfalls in South Dakota, Roughlock Falls, is in Spearfish, SD, fed by Little Spearfish Creek, creating the multi-tiered waterfall. This is an easy hike in an ideal area for those wanting to have an afternoon hanging out with friends and family. It offers ample photo opportunities and plenty of space for those wanting to hang out amongst the numerous picnic tables surrounding the falls.
The Details
Hike Distance: 2.1 mi (3.4 km) out and back
Hike Duration: It took me about an hour in total. Roughly 45 minutes of moving time plus another 15 minutes checking out the various observation decks and picnic areas. I’d budget 1-3 hours. The hike is quick and easy, but if you’re looking to spend more time at the observation decks and utilize the picnic areas to hang out with friends and family while doing some eating, plan for the upper end.
Hike Difficulty: This hike is very easy and relatively flat most of the way. The path is wide and primarily dirt, with a few rocks protruding here and there. There are multiple benches along the way if you need to rest. The only part with a significant incline is when going to one of the top observation decks. You’ll need to go up a steeper sidewalk to get there. However, if you’re reasonably fit and used to hiking, this is no problem.
Hike Elevation Gain: 213 ft (65 m)
Parking: This area has two different gravel parking lots. Both of which have restrooms nearby.

How to get there
Take Highway 14A near Spearfish and turn onto Roughlock Falls Rd. You’ll drive past Spearfish Canyon Lodge, and shortly after, you’ll see signs to park at Roughlock Falls. There are two lots. If choosing to hike the trail to get to Roughlock Falls, park in the lower lot. Otherwise, drive further up the road until you come to the upper lot, which has several picnic areas, a bathroom, and decks overlooking the falls. These lots are pretty large, but they may be a bit crowded since it’s a popular place.
Hiking to Roughlock Falls
The trailhead begins at the Southeast corner of the lower lot just across the bridge. There is a sign showing how to access the Spearfish Falls and Savoy trails located nearby as well. Take a right after the sign to begin Roughlock Falls Trail.
While walking the path, you’ll have a lot of foliage on either side and the sounds of Little Spearfish Creek on your right. Shortly after starting, you’ll encounter an extended observation deck on your right which allows you to observe the creek and surrounding area.
As you keep walking, numerous signs present information about the nature and wildlife surrounding Spearfish Canyon. You’ll encounter several benches along the way as well.
Of course, the payoff is the many cascading waterfalls to be observed from multiple locations. At the end of the trail, you’ll get the opportunity to see them from a lower deck and a few other spots up above. If you’re looking to make an afternoon of it, this is the perfect time to take a break and hang out at one of the many picnic areas at the top.
